The bright blue is a color associated with the throat, and therefore the voice; so, together, these stripes basically translate to “having a gender associated with the throat/voice.”

Phonogender was coined on February 20, 2019 by tumblr user momma-mogai-sphinx. The flag was created at the same time.2
